A developing coastal low pressure system will continue to affect the Outer Banks area through Monday morning, bringing localized heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for minor coastal flooding along the soundside, per an update from the National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office.
Wind gusts up to 40 mph on Sunday and Monday morning are expected, with moderate to heavy rainfall of 2-3 inches for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, and localized higher amounts.
On Monday morning, gusty W to NW winds will result in a small coastal flooding threat to soundside Hatteras Island, with 1 foot of inundation above ground level possible.
The low will bring its main impacts to the area Sunday morning in the form of heavy rain, localized flooding, and an isolated severe weather threat. All impacts from this system are expected to remain minor, including coastal flooding, and only minor (sub-advisory level) water rises are possible.
Service interruptions are possible throughout the day for the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry due to weather conditions, and the public can follow updates on the ferry schedule at https://twitter.com/NCFerryHatteras/.
