Dare County Schools received generous donations from the Knights of Columbus and Surfin’ Spoon to support districtwide exceptional children (EC) programs.
On Jan. 30, Dare County and Currituck County Schools were honored during a special ceremony hosted by the Catholic fraternal benefit society, Knights of Columbus, at Holy Redeemer Church in Kitty Hawk. The ceremony highlighted the Knights of Columbus’ Least Among My Brethren (LAMB) program. The program was adopted statewide in 1974 to meet the needs of community members with learning differences through fundraising. During the ceremony, Knights of Columbus members presented Dare County Schools with $8,100 to support EC classrooms.
This month Whitney Hines, co-owner of Nags Head frozen yogurt shop, Surfin’ Spoon, also donated $5,000 from their annual Surfing for Autism fundraiser to support EC in Dare County Schools.
These generous donations will allow EC teachers to build specialized programs and expand resources to meet the needs of their individual students.
“Our special education program is so fortunate to have the community support we get from Knights of Columbus and Surfin’ Spoon. When our teachers have ideas for adding personal and special touches to the daily experiences of their students, this type of thoughtfulness gives wings to those dreams,” said Director of Exceptional Children’s Services Reida Roberts.
The EC department’s mission is to prepare students with the education and skills they will need to live independently and be successful in college or a career. The program provides appropriate education designed to meet the unique needs of students with learning challenges.
