KILL DEVIL HILLS — Roger D. Pfendler, 67 years old, of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away on February 21, 2023, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City after a long struggle with chronic renal disease. He was predeceased by his father, Norman Pfendler; and mother, Stella Mosicki.
Roger leaves behind his wife, Catherine; brother, Norman; son, Jason Szewczyk (Upstate NY); stepdaughters, Sarah Metott, Karen Sehn (Upstate NY), Karalyn Stutz (Colorado), and stepson Frank Crawford, III (Upstate NY).
Roger grew up in Boonville, NY. He met his wife Cathy while they both were working at Oneida Healthcare Center. They married in 1984 and resided in Camden, NY until 2000 when they moved to Kill Devil Hills, NC. He worked as part of the original nursing crew that opened the Outer Banks Hospital in 2002 until his retirement from active nursing in 2014.
Even after retirement, he continued his education through conferences and community activities always seeking knowledge and was a wealth of information. Roger remained active in the community serving on the bicycle-pedestrian safety coalition, the OBRA ham radio club, the North Carolina Nurses Association, GEM volunteer, various fundraising events and was active in his neighborhood with the Landing Lot Association.
Roger loved cooking, grilling, and sharing culinary achievements with his co-workers and friends. Roger was a loving and giving person and continued to give as an organ and tissue donor upon his passing. He was often regarded as tough on the exterior but was kind and soft in the heart.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal services. Family and neighbors gathered on Thursday at The Landing, where Roger loved to fish and socialize.
