The National Park Service has issued citations and fines again five teens and young adults from Carteret County who broke into the Cape Lookout Lighthouse on Sunday night.
Rangers chased away the group on their first attempt to break in to the beacon around 10 p.m. that night. But eight to 10 people returned after midnight, the seashore said in a Facebook post.
The group then used tools from their boat to remove hardware from the door to allow them inside. The rangers investigating found that those involved were all from Carteret County and the five individuals that actually broke in were all from Down East communities. Citations and fines were issued to those who went inside the lighthouse.
A reminder, except for members of the USCG conducting periodic maintenance checks on the light or park staff checking the condition of the lighthouse tower, the lighthouse is closed this season to all public entry.
